The Rushmore Open Learning Program Practical Paper

A practical paper must, not surprisingly, show evidence of practical application. The typical layout for a practical paper would be:

Executive Summary: about 150 – 200 words
Overview of (name of the course text): about 300 words
Problem to be solved
Solution
Implementation
Results (or Outcome)
Conclusion

These headings are not obligatory – for example, you might put in a heading ‘Recommendation’ or ‘Lessons learned’ – particularly if your results were below expectations, or omit the text overview for a customised course.  You will then cite your sources in footnotes, as applicable. However, the paper must contain the information expected from each of the headings suggested.  A working style template is provided for your use.

The Rushmore Open Learning Research paper (Search of Literature v Original Research)

Each research paper written will be unique in scope and findings.  Research papers offer insight into challenges unmet and challenge the creativity of the writer in ways which open new opportunities for learning.  They are guided by the student’s advisor.  A working style template is provided for your use.

Rushmore Open Learning Dissertations / Theses

Once you have been assigned to your advisor, you will work with him or her to produce your research proposal. Your advisor will tell you what content is required. Once your advisor has approved the content, the proposal will be edited as a course paper.

Once your proposal has been accepted, you will work with your advisor to prepare the first chapter, which is usually an overview of the literature available, or something similar.  Once the draft has been approved, it should be sent for editing. You will then repeat the procedure for subsequent chapters, which are usually of about 5,000 words, finishing with your lists of resources, list of abbreviations if required (often necessary because of the number of acronyms and abbreviation used by students working on research relating to UN or government agencies), list of tables, graphics, or whatever else is required. Finally, you will generate your Table of Contents. Your dissertation or thesis will then be complete.  A working style template is provided for your use.  The same general procedure with each chapter – discuss, draft, send to editing, assemble – is followed for papers that the student intends to publish as a book.  The specific criteria and the successful meeting of those criteria in the case of unaccredited degree candidates will be determined by the application of the information from the text to real world situations, as evidenced to the Professor during his evaluation process.  In the case of a CMI Accredited Degree, the assessment and grade issued will be contingent upon the quality of the paper or project presented, and its meeting of the standards as set within the CMI Guidelines for that course.

Timebound Appeals and Complaints

Appeals or Complaints must be filed within 30 days of the event under Rushmore University standards.  CMI sets its own standards, which are as follows:

Appeals Procedures for Learners in the CMI Certified Program

A learner must in the first instance follow the appeals procedure of the CMI Approved Centre. An Approved Centre must at all times have a clear and up-to-date appeals procedure which must be provided to learners. Only when this route has been exhausted can a learner appeal to CMI.

A learner may appeal to CMI, free of charge, regarding decisions of an Approved Centre on the following grounds:

a)  Discrimination of any sort
b)  Dissatisfaction over assessment decisions
c)  Dissatisfaction over quality of tuition

In all cases, appeals must be submitted, in writing, to CMI Awarding Body, who will provide a copy to the Centre’s External Verifier.  A written acknowledgement of the appeal, stating when the appeal will be heard, will be issued within two working days.

The Centre’s External Verifier will investigate the appeal and report his/her findings, in writing, to CMI Awarding Body within 21 working days.  The appeal decision will be given to the learner, in writing, within 28 working days of receipt of the written appeal.

If the learner is not satisfied with the appeal decision the Head of Awarding Body and Regional Chief Verifier, and where appropriate the Appeals Committee, act as the ultimate arbiters in the case of dispute between learner and Centre.
